พาร์ทหนึ่งในข้อสอบ IELTS ที่หลายๆ คนพบปัญหาว่าทำยังไง ก็ทำไม่ทันซะที ก็คือ Reading นั่นเอง ครูเชื่อว่า วิธีการแก้ปัญหานี้ ที่ดีที่สุด ก็คือการที่ต้องฝึกทำข้อสอบเยอะๆ พร้อมกับอ่านบทความที่หลากหลาย และท่องคำศัพท์ให้มากเข้าไว้ไปในตัว (ฟังดูไม่ง่ายเลยใช่มั้ยล่ะคะ มันก็ไม่ง่ายจริงๆ แต่ก็ไม่ได้ยากจนเกินไปค่ะ)

ปัญหาหลักอย่างหนึ่ง ที่ทำให้การต่อสู้กับเวลา 60 นาทีนี้ช่างยากเย็น คือคำศัพท์ที่ยากยิ่ง ประเด็นอยู่ที่ว่า จริงๆ แล้ว เราไม่จำเป็นต้องรู้ความหมายของคำศัพท์ทุกคำเป๊ะๆ แต่ต้องรู้จักวิธีการเดาความหมายอย่างมีเหตุผล (make a logical guess, not a blind guess!) วันนี้ มีเทคนิคพื้นฐานของการเดาความหมายคำศัพท์จากปริบทมาฝากกันค่ะ

Clues 1: Definition or Synonym Clue

บางครั้ง ในปริบทแวดล้อม จะมีความหมาย หรือ คำเหมือนของคำนั้นๆ (synonym) ที่เราไม่เข้าใจอยู่ ซึ่งนี่นับว่าเป็นประเภทของปริบทที่ง่ายที่สุด เพราะผู้เขียนตั้งใจบอกความหมายของคำนั้นๆ ไว้แทบจะโดยตรงเลยทีเดียว เพียงแต่เราจะมองออกหรือไม่เท่านั้น clue words ต่างๆ ที่จะช่วยเราได้ มีอาทิเช่น  means, defined as, is known as, the term และ is called บางครั้งเครื่องหมายวรรคตอน ก็จะช่วยเรามองหาความหมายของคำนั้นๆ ได้

- ความหมายของคำศัพท์ที่เรามองหา อาจจะถูกคั่นอยู่ด้วย เครื่องหมายวรรคตอน เช่น comma หรือ dash

- อาจตามหลังเครื่องหมายอย่าง  colon (:)

- หรืออาจจะเขียนอยู่ใน เครื่องหมายวรรคตอน เช่น parentheses ( ) หรือ brackets [ ] หรือ quotation marks “ ”

คำศัพท์ที่ผู้สอบอาจจะไม่รู้จัก คือ product liability ซึ่งความหมายนั้น จริงๆ ก็ได้เขียนไว้ให้แล้ว หลังเครื่องหมาย dash

• “Victimless crimes” is the term for crimes in which the offenders’ illegal actions do damage to themselves rather than to others.

คำศัพท์ที่ผู้สอบอาจจะไม่รู้จัก คือ victimless crimes ซึ่งความหมายนั้น จริงๆ ก็ได้เขียนไว้ให้แล้ว หลัง clue words “the term for”

Synonyms คือคำหรือวลีที่มีความหมายแบบเดียวกัน clue words ต่างๆ ที่จะช่วยเราหา synonyms ได้ มีอาทิเช่น  or, in other words, that is, by this we mean, that is to say และalso known as

ดูตัวอย่างกันหน่อยดีกว่า จะได้เข้าใจง่ายขึ้นค่ะ

• A last resort of individuals or businesses that cannot fulfill their financial obligations is legal insolvency, or bankruptcy.

คำศัพท์ที่ผู้สอบอาจจะไม่รู้จัก คือ legal insolvency ซึ่งความหมายนั้น จริงๆ ก็ได้เขียนไว้ให้แล้ว หลังคำสันธาน or นั่นเองค่ะ

เทคนิคอื่นๆ ในการ guess word ไว้จะเอามาฝากอีกทีวันหลังนะคะ

หลายๆ คนวิ่งมาหา (เดินมาบ้าง) เพื่อขอตัวอย่าง SoP สาขาสุดฮิต MBA กับครู ครูจึงขอเอาตัวอย่างดีๆ มาโพสต์ให้ดูกันไปเลย ถ้าจะนำไปใช้ ก็พยายามปรับเปลี่ยนให้เป็นของตัวเองหน่อยละกันนะจ๊ะ

ช่วงนี้ นร.จำนวนมาก กำลังเร่งส่งเอกสารสมัครเข้ามหาวิทยาลัยกันใหญ่ และทุกๆ คนคงตระหนักกันดีอยู่แล้วว่า องค์ประกอบสำคัญของการสมัครนั้น คือ Statement of Purpose หรือ ที่เรียกกันสั้นๆ ว่า SOP นั่นแหละค่ะ ทำให้ นร.จำนวนมากเช่นกัน วิ่งมาให้ครูแนะนำ รวมทั้งปรับแก้ SOP กันอย่างขวักไขว่ ครูจึงคิดว่า ไหนๆ ก็ไหนๆ แล้ว เอาตัวอย่าง SOP ที่ดี มาให้ดูกันเลยดีกว่า นร.คนนี้ จะไปเรียนต่อที่อังกฤษ ในสาขา Automotive Engineering ค่ะ

Currently, I am a final year student at __________ University. My course of study, Manufacturing Engineering and Management, has provided me a large amount of knowledge mainly in the field of engineering management and partly of business skills, one of which focuses on automotive business. I would love to further my education not directly in the previous field, yet a related one, the Msc in Automotive Engineering. Below, the reasons and motivations will be explicitly illustrated.

I have long been interested in the automotive-related fields, not only in the appearances of vehicles, but also in the mechanical, suspension as well as other electronic systems. Consequently, I always took an internship at many garage service stations whenever I went back to Thailand for long vacation. One of the most memorable experiences was when I was a trainee at the station which rendered services in Thailand Rally Championship, the competition approved by FIA. Although the duration was only for three months, I gained a much larger amount of knowledge and experience. Additionally, I believe that the automotive industry will become one of the decisive factors to help enhance the country’s business in the future. To make the automotive industry attain a worldly leading rank is at present one of the government’s business objectives. Recently, the achievement has proved to be within reach since the Motor Show held in Thailand has been ranked as one of the best ten approved by OICA, the organisation responsible for the Motor Show exhibitions all over the world.

Last but not least, although my focus of interest in the Bachelor’s Degree was not directly the Automotive Engineering, I believe that my perspective and knowledge long gained from other sources as well as my personal interest are adequate as a fundamental basis for me to further my education in the mentioned field.

With regard to my future academic pursuit, I wish to work towards Msc in Automotive Engineering at the University of Bath, where the fame in such field is highly recognised on the international level. I believe that it will give me the opportunity to rapidly enhance not only skills, but also the mindset needed to achieve my career goals. As a result, I am certain that the Msc in Automotive Engineering at University of Bath will definitely bring about the utmost accomplishments of my career destination.

เพราะสโนวแมนมีเท้าที่เย็น

Have (or get) cold feet เป็น Idiom อีกแล้วค่า ที่ว่า มีเท้าเย็นนี้ หมายความว่า รู้สึกกลัว หรืออายค่ะ (to be or become timid or fearful or timid)

Eg: Don’t get cold feet over your wedding! (ใช้บุพบท over + สิ่งที่กลัวนั่นเองค่ะ)

หลายๆ ครั้ง การที่ นร. ตอบคำถามใน Part 3 ของการสอบ Speaking ได้ไม่ดีเท่าที่ควรนั้น เกิดจากการที่ นร. ไม่เข้าใจคำถามที่ examiner ยิงมาค่ะ ซึ่งครูคิดว่า ส่วนหนึ่งอาจเป็นผลมาจากการที่สมองของผู้สอบเริ่มล้าจากการตอบคำถามใน Part 1 และ Part 2 ก็เลยส่งผลให้ Part 3 เป็น Part ที่ดึงคะแนนของผู้สอบลงมา ทั้งๆ ที่ ช่วง Part 1 และ Part 2  พูดได้ดีเลยด้วยซ้ำ ทำให้ครูได้ยิน examiner พูดประโยคนี้กับผู้สอบเสมอเลยค่ะ

อันที่จริง ในส่วนของการสอบ Speaking นั้น จะดีกว่า ถ้าผู้สอบเริ่มต้นอย่างธรรมดาๆ (เหมือนกับการวอร์มเครื่อง) แต่เมื่อพูดไปเรื่อยๆ ก็เริ่มพูดคล่องยิ่งขึ้นๆ ไปเรื่อยๆ แบบนี้ ย่อมได้แนนมากกว่าการเริ่มต้นอย่างดี แต่ตกม้าตายตอนจบค่ะ

วันนี้ ครูขอยกตัวอย่างคำถามใน Part 3 บางคำถามที่ นร. 80% – 90% เข้าใจโจทย์ผิดเสมอ ลองดูนะคะ ว่าถ้าเป็นเรา เราจะตอบอย่างไร เมื่อเจอโจทย์แบบนี้
